The 2019 Doctoral Convocation for doctoral candidates will be held Friday, May 10, 2019, from 2:00 - 3:00 PM in the Stude Concert Hall at the Shepherd School of Music's Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Potential degree candidates will be emailed registration instructions early March 2019. The deadline for registering for the Doctoral Convocation is April 12, 2019.
The 2019 Advanced Degrees Convocation will be held Friday, May 10, 2019, from 9:00 - 10:30 AM in Tudor Fieldhouse, followed by a reception in the foyer of the Shepherd School of Music's Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Potential degree candidates will be emailed registration instructions early March 2019. The deadline for registering for the Advanced Degrees Convocation is April 12, 2019.
The plenary Commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 8:30 AM in the Academic Quadrangle onlooking historic Lovett Hall. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be relocated to Tudor Fieldhouse, where seating is limited. Each graduate will recieve two inclement weather tickets from their graduate coordinator.
Hotel and travel information is available on the Commencement website. If your guests to these events will need a letter of invitation for a visit to the US for their consulate, please reach out to the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) who will be able to assist you.

February 1, 2019 - Last day to submit Application for Degree to the Registrar's Office and the Petition for Degree Certification to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Degree candidates are encouraged to work with their department coordinators to submit the Candidacy Master's and Non-thesis Master's Petitions. Information on thesis defense and thesis submission may be found at our thesis submission website. Please contact your graduate coordinator if you have additional questions.
February 22, 2019 - Last day to submit Thesis Master's Candidacy Petitions, Certification of Non-Thesis Master's, Form for Candidacy Master's, and Ph.D. Candidacy Petitions to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Degree candidates are encouraged to work with their department coordinators to submit the Petition for Approval of Candidacy if you did not petition for candidacy at an earlier date.
April 19, 2019 (NOON) - Deadline to submit thesis to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for May 2019 degree conferral.
The degree conferral date for mid-year degrees will be August 31 and December 30 of each calendar year. The faculty will vote in late September to confer August degrees. The faculty will vote in January to confer December degrees. After that time, an official transcript will be available from the Registrar's Office. Occasionally a degree recipient may require an official document confirming their Rice degree. In these instances, a Rice University degree recipient may request a miniature facsimile diploma on letter-sized paper. Diplomas from the December degree conferral are expected to be available in the spring.
