I am Iago Mariano, a third-year PhD student in the Biochemistry and Cell Biology program. My lab studies mutagenesis, focusing on understanding antibiotic resistance and cancer. Moreover, I'm the current president of the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA) at Rice. Before starting my PhD, I worked for two years in a vaccine company in Brazil, developing vaccines against Leptospirosis. My hobbies are going to the gym and playing soccer (watching and playing), which I used to play five times per week (I miss that). An interesting fact about me is that I volunteered at a hospital clowning for two years, cheering up patients.

Fun fact:

I do not know how to swim.

Favorite thing about Rice:

The campus.

Favorite thing about Houston:

Rice University.

Why did you decide to go to grad school?

Medical research is a passion in my life.
