The Rice African Graduate Student Association brought culture, fashion and community to the Grad Bubble with AfriRoyal 2026 on April 18, an evening celebrating African excellence and the growing visibility of African graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at Rice University.
Hosted by RAGSA, the event featured a red carpet, runway, food, performances and dancing, creating a vibrant space for students to connect through cultural expression and shared celebration. From the entrance to the dance floor, AfriRoyal showcased the richness and diversity of African cultures represented across Rice’s graduate community.
“AfriRoyal was a night where elegance met culture, and everyone understood the assignment,” said Onyekachi Idigo, a Ph.D. student from Nigeria in the Biosciences Department. “From the moment guests walked in, the energy was clear: They didn’t come to play, they came to slay. It was glitz, glam and African excellence — and we set the tone from the entrance.”
RAGSA is a community of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars interested in the culture, history and community of countries across the African continent. The organization supports members in their academic pursuits while also helping students and postdocs acclimate socially to the many environments they encounter on Rice’s campus.
Beyond academic support, RAGSA is deeply committed to fostering social awareness, advocacy and belonging. Through events, collaborations and outreach, the organization works to amplify the voices and lived experiences of African graduate students, creating platforms for dialogue, cultural expression and community engagement.
