Close to 50 Fulbright graduate students gathered in the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies outdoor gathering space at Sewall Hall for a global potluck celebrating culture, community and connection. The event brought together students from across disciplines and countries, each contributing a homemade dish that reflected their heritage.
Tables quickly filled with colorful main courses and desserts representing dozens of culinary traditions. Students introduced their dishes one by one, sharing how they prepared them and the personal stories behind each recipe; from family favorites and holiday traditions to meals learned from parents or adapted for life in Houston.
The informal setting encouraged conversation as students compared ingredients, swapped cooking tips and discovered new flavors. For many, the potluck offered a comforting taste of home and a chance to connect with fellow Fulbright scholars who understand the challenges and excitement of studying abroad.
Hosted by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and held during the first day of International Education Week, the event showcased the richness of Rice’s international community and the value of creating welcoming spaces where students can share their cultures and experiences.
