Spring Break as a Graduate Student

Rice's campus during the Spring

Spring break at Rice isn’t just a break from classes and labs; it’s a great time to relax, try new things, and connect with others. Since Rice is right in the middle of Houston, there’s always something interesting to do, whether you want to rest, explore, or give back.

Some students travel far, but many of us stay and enjoy the quiet on campus. The Academic Quad, usually full of people, becomes a calm and beautiful place to read or sit under the big oak trees. The Rec Center stays open, so you can go to a yoga class or play a game of basketball, work out at the gym, etc. If you’re catching up on work, Fondren Library is also open. And, of course, Brochstein Pavilion is the perfect spot to grab a coffee and get some studying done.

You don’t have to leave Houston to have fun. Spring break is also when the Houston Rodeo happens. It’s a massive event with live music, BBQ, and all kinds of rodeo fun. The Museum District is nearby and free for Rice students, and places like the Menil Collection or NASA’s Johnson Space Center are worth visiting. If you love food, this is the time for crawfish boils or trying out dumpling spots in Chinatown. For something different, you can check out Smither Park's cool mosaic art or kayak at sunset on Buffalo Bayou. The list of activities is exhaustive, so spring break is never dull. There is always a fun activity to try or a place to visit.
