Introduction
When I first wrote about the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to Houston, I focused mostly on the city itself: the matches at NRG Stadium, the downtown atmosphere, and the excitement of finally living close to a World Cup for the first time.
But now, the tournament is coming even closer to home.
Rice University is becoming one of the most active universities involved in Houston’s World Cup preparations. In fact, Rice is the only higher education institution serving as an official Houston World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter.
That means Rice will not just watch the World Cup happen nearby. Campus will actually become part of the experience.
The Orange FanWalk Starts at Rice
One of the biggest World Cup events announced so far is the famous Dutch “Orange FanWalk,” which will begin at Rice Stadium before the Netherlands vs Sweden match on June 20.
If you have never seen videos of Dutch fans during international tournaments, look them up. Thousands of supporters dressed completely in orange march together toward the stadium singing, dancing, and basically turning entire streets into one giant celebration.
Fans will gather at Rice Stadium starting at 8 a.m., followed by live performances from the Orange Fan Team before the 2.5-mile walk to NRG Stadium begins at 8:45 a.m.
The event will even feature the famous double-decker Orange Bus that traveled across the Atlantic for the tournament.
Honestly, this could end up being one of the coolest events of the entire World Cup in Houston.
Official Rice Watch Parties
Rice will also host official World Cup watch parties across campus during the tournament.
Some of the announced events include:
- June 11 — Mexico vs South Africa at Valhalla Courtyard
- June 12 — USA vs Paraguay at the Ion
- June 17 — Portugal vs Congo DR at the Ion
- June 29 — Round of 32 watch party at Rice Stadium R Room
- July 1 — Another Round of 32 watch party at Rice Stadium R Room
As someone from Mexico, I already know the Mexico watch party at Valhalla is going to be packed.
And honestly, that is part of what makes Rice such a fun place for the World Cup. Rice is incredibly international, so every match day will probably feel different depending on who is playing.
Why This Is Special for Rice Students
Most students will probably not attend many matches in person because World Cup tickets are expensive. But Rice students are still in an incredible position:
- Connected by METRORail
- Official campus events
- International student community
You really do not need a stadium ticket to feel part of the World Cup atmosphere.
Conclusion
As someone who grew up watching the World Cup from far away, it still feels surreal that Rice is becoming part of the tournament itself.
Whether it is joining the Orange FanWalk, watching a game at Valhalla, or just seeing thousands of international fans around campus, this is probably going to be one of the most memorable moments Houston students experience during grad school.
And honestly, I cannot wait.
