Jeffrey Caliedo is a Ph.D. student in Rice University's English Department researching Black poetics, southern literature, and queer theory. Before coming to Rice, he received his B.A. in English Literature and African American Studies at Yale University. There, his thesis traced a trajectory of African American writers of the Harlem Renaissance into the contemporary.
Prior to his move to Houston for the doctoral program, Caliedo returned to his high school alma mater in Jackson, Mississippi where he taught English literature.
Why I decided to go to grad school:
After spending time in the classroom and in nonprofit spaces for work, I missed being able to produce sustained, peer-reviewed research. Pursuing graduate school at Rice has given me the opportunity to maintain all of my passions in an environment I love.
Fun fact about me:
I journal, scrapbook, and make collages!
Favorite thing about Rice:
My favorite thing about Rice is the people! From the faculty to my personal cohort, I have appreciated the wonderful connections I've made here.
Favorite thing about Houston:
The food! There is such a great range of culture here, and it is reflected in the spaces and food.
