Sebastián is a Ph.D. student in Applied Physics at Rice University, originally from Santiago, Chile. He grew up in a low-income neighborhood and was the first in his family to attend college—an experience that shaped his view of science as a pathway to opportunity. With a background in theoretical physics and support from the Fulbright BIO scholarship, he now conducts research on lithium-ion batteries using phase-field and mesoscale modeling.
Coming from a country rich in lithium, Sebastián is driven to connect fundamental physics with practical energy solutions that can support sustainable development in Chile and across Latin America. He is also deeply committed to advancing equity in science, shaping public policy, and mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds.
