About Me
Let me tell you, I’ve had a lot of burgers. Growing up, summertime meant burgers on the grill, and there’s nothing quite like it. So naturally, when I moved to Houston for grad school, I made it my mission to find the best burgers in this sprawling city. Now, after a few years of testing out the local joints, I think I’ve put together a pretty solid list of the best burgers in Houston. Whether you’re craving a classic cheeseburger or something a little offbeat, this city has got you covered.
1. Lankford's: Home of No Nonsense, Classic Burgers
88 Dennis St, Houston, TX 77006
Lankford's is a Houston institution, and honestly, it feels like a hidden gem despite being around for decades. Located in an old house in Montrose, this spot has the perfect no-frills vibe. You walk in, order at the counter, and then sit down with a tray of pure burger perfection. I always go for their "Grim Reaper" which is loaded with mac & cheese, jalapeños, a fried egg, cayenne butter, habanero sauce, and bacon—this is not a dainty burger, but it’s a must-try. Of course if you’re not a spice fiend like me, their classic cheeseburger is incredible too. If you love a classic, greasy, no-nonsense burger, Lankford's is the place for you.
2. Trill Burgers: A Rap Fan’s Fantasy
3607 S Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77098
Trill Burgers has quickly become one of the most talked-about burger spots in the city, and for good reason. A project from rapper Bun B and Chef Mike Pham, Trill Burgers delivers on flavor with its smashed-patty style burgers. The patties are thin and crispy on the edges, with a perfect sear that seals in the juiciness. The "OG Trill Burger" is my go-to—it’s a simple cheeseburger elevated by the high-quality ingredients and technique. If you want to see what all the hype is about, this is your spot. P.S. They sell these at Texans games, too!
3. Nancy’s Hustle: For the Fancy Folks
2704 Polk St, Houston, TX 77003
Nancy’s Hustle may be known for its innovative small plates and killer wine list, but their burger is what dreams are made of. This burger feels upscale without being pretentious, served on an English muffin instead of a regular bun. It’s perfectly seasoned, topped with cheddar, pickles, and a house-made aioli. I’d recommend coming here with friends, ordering a few shared plates, and then making sure you save room for the burger—it’s that good. This spot is a little more expensive, but totally worth it.
4. Hopdoddy Burger Bar: Chill Vibes, Better Fries
5510 Morningside Dr Suite 100, Houston, TX 77005
Hopdoddy is a great spot for a more casual yet still gourmet burger experience. Originally from Austin, Hopdoddy has built a loyal following here in Houston. Their burgers are made with all-natural ingredients, and the variety on the menu is impressive. My personal favorite is the "Magic Shroom," topped with goat cheese, mushrooms, mayo, and basil pesto. Pair your burger with their signature truffle fries, and you’ll be set. Bonus points for their extensive craft beer and cocktail options.
5. The Hobbit Cafe: A Portal to the Shire
2243 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX 77098
This quirky spot has been serving up unique burgers since 1972, and it’s the place to go if you want something out of the ordinary. The Hobbit Cafe offers a variety of burgers, including bison, turkey, and veggie options. I’m partial to the "Prancing Pony," a massive burger stacked with bacon, cheddar cheese, and barbecue sauce. The vibe here is laid-back, with plenty of outdoor seating in their tree-shaded patio. Whether you're a Lord of the Rings fan or just in the mood for something a little different, The Hobbit Cafe is a must-visit. Plus if you go here, you will most certainly leave with leftovers!
Burgers for Every Taste!
From the classic, no-frills vibe at Lankford’s to the innovative creations at Nancy’s Hustle, Houston's burger scene has something for everyone. Whether you’re a purist or looking to try something new, this city’s diverse burger joints are guaranteed to satisfy. So, if you're ever in need of a burger fix, I highly recommend checking out one of these spots—you won’t be disappointed.
