Coming into graduate school for the first time can be very stressful! This is because graduate school life can be super demanding, with a big combination of homework, projects, research, and studying that can feel like it takes a million hours a week to accomplish. With all of these things to balance, students often have difficulty managing their lives outside of work. This includes finding friends, socials, student clubs, and much more. However, an important aspect that everyone should incorporate into their daily lives is a little self-care. Whether it’s attending events, going on a walk, or eating your favorite meal, it’s essential to take breaks and prioritize your well-being so you don’t feel overwhelmed with school. Additionally, taking part in campus events can help you get to know your school better and explore what it has to offer, such as building a new support system, creating fun experiences, and maybe even enjoying some free food and giveaways!

Here are 4 different campus organizations you can be involved with:

1. Thrive@Rice

Thrive@Rice is a campus organization designed to help doctoral students navigate their first year at Rice. First-year students are paired with upperclassmen PhD students to build meaningful connections, receive peer mentorship, and gain guidance as they transition into graduate life both academically and socially. Through community-building events and open conversations about the realities of grad school, Thrive@Rice helps create a supportive foundation for success during the first year and beyond.

You can find more information about Thrive@Rice here: https://graduate.rice.edu/thrive

2. Rice Athletics

One of the most underrated parts of Rice University is its athletics! Many international students, especially those experiencing the U.S. for the first time, may be unfamiliar with the sports culture here at Rice. Every season, there are different sports to watch, such as baseball, football, basketball, and many more! Attending games is a great way to get to know the school, learn more about American sports, perhaps win free items, and support our teams by cheering on the Owls!

You can find more information about Rice Athletics, the sports, game schedules, etc., here: https://riceowls.com/

3. Rice Graduate Housing events

If you are a first-year living in either Rice Graduate Apartments or Rice Village Apartments, then you are in luck, as these apartments are known to be “the home for first years”! Whether you walk in or out of the shuttle, walk to your laundry, or hang out in the lounge, you can always meet another first year! Additionally, both RVA and RGA host community events here and there, depending on the time of the semester. For instance, for Valentine’s Day, they hosted a game party with food and prizes that got several residents engaged with others. Overall, being involved in Rice Graduate Housing events is a great way to expand your connections and build a strong social life!

4. Graduate Student Association

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is another great organization that represents and supports graduate students across campus. GSA works to advocate for student needs, host social and professional development events, and create opportunities for graduate students to connect with one another outside of their departments. From networking mixers and cultural celebrations to funding opportunities and campus initiatives, GSA plays an important role in strengthening the graduate student community at Rice. Getting involved with GSA is a wonderful way to meet students from different disciplines, share your voice, and stay engaged in the broader graduate experience.

We understand that the adjustment to graduate school for the first time is not easy. But please keep in mind that these amazing organizations will enhance your social and grad school experience here at Rice! Rice also has professional support available to help you manage the adjustment. If you need an experienced specialist to talk to, please visit the Wellbeing and Counseling Center on campus, as they are a confidential, supportive, and helpful resource to speak with.

I wish you the best of luck navigating this journey, and as always, Go Owls!
