Meet Rice’s Graduate Ambassador Robin Mo

Mo shares his interest, experience, and advice to prospective graduate students

Rice University

Meet Robin Mo. Mo is a second year Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Biosciences at Rice University. Mo is from China and is a Rice Graduate Ambassador. Ambassadors are students who represent the university and help prospective students gain knowledge of student life as a graduate student at Rice.

Mo chose Rice as a graduate school because he wants to better understand the ecosystem and work with leading-edge scientists to bring innovations. He also chose Rice due to Rice’s location in the Texas Medical Center. His research focuses on creating a novel class of antibiotics with modern RNA technology that are highly specific and effective.

When he is not conducting research, he is serving in various leadership roles within the Rice community. He is a part of Enventure, Rice Alliance, Lilie, and a Graduate Wellbeing Peer on campus.

Mo advises prospective students on how work-life balance is very crucial to a successful graduate school experience and incorporating the school’s resources could help the process.

“Graduate lives are challenging and can sometimes be stressful,” said Mo. “But don't worry, you will always be supported by your colleagues, the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) office, and the other resources available on campus.”

Mo advises current students not to limit their education to one specific field but to be open and diversify their knowledge while they have the access to do so.

“By being a Rice student, you can literally take any class you want, even if it's offered by another department and as long as you meet their prerequisites,” said Mo. “I have taken two classes from the business school, and they were free! If I were an MBA student, those classes could have easily cost me more than $8,000 each!”

Outside of academics, Mo enjoys golfing and the Museum District.
