An Invitation
Go beyond the brochure
this October.
Meet the people behind the programs — the faculty you’ll learn from, the students currently enrolled, and the staff who’ll guide you through the process. Information sessions, coffee chats and campus tours, all month.

What to ask us
Rice runs graduate programs across architecture, engineering and computing, humanities, music, natural sciences, and the social sciences. They are small by design, which means you work closely with faculty from the start rather than after you have proved yourself. Deadlines, test scores and transcripts are covered in the application FAQ.

“Ph.D. or master’s?”
The two routes point at different work rather than different levels. A Ph.D. ends in a dissertation and trains researchers. Master’s degrees are shorter and built to advance careers, and several run online as well as on campus. Ask which one matches the work you want to be doing.
“What does funding actually cover?”
Doctoral students at Rice generally pay no tuition and receive a stipend, with no separate funding application. Master’s programs are tuition-based, but scholarships do exist and employers often contribute. Ask what your program offers and who tends to qualify.
“What’s Houston like?”
Rice sits on 300 wooded acres next to the Texas Medical Center and the museum district. Most people apply without ever visiting — ask about a campus tour, and ask what the cost of living here is actually like.

Doctoral Application Fee Waiver Weeks
Requests open Oct. 14 and close Nov. 1. Doctoral applicants worldwide can request a waiver for the application fee — no code needed, it attaches to the email address on your application. Your completed application still has to be in by Nov. 27, 10:59 p.m. CST for the waiver to hold, and a 3.0 GPA or the equivalent is required.
Issued until they run out. One request covers multiple doctoral programs. Not available for master’s programs or for programs in the Jones School of Business.
