Bio:

Morgan is a Ph.D. student who explores African American history. Her studies have spanned from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, focusing mostly on the United States but also examining the Americas more broadly, as far back as the colonial period. Morgan's research centers on racial determination cases, specifically those of enslaved people using the law to claim non-Black identities and consequent freedom. Exploring constructions and manifestations of race, racial ambiguity, racial passing, and gender, this research highlights unique identities and how they were used strategically, as well as contributing to understandings of race in the United States.
